Amazon has declared a program that tests if devices are 'stress-free' to Setup :
The world is become a smarter place to live, all thanks to the countless smart devices that are available in the market right now. From refrigerators and microwave ovens (ehmm...does that ring a bell?) to smart sunglasses (Bose Frames and Echo Frames) to even shoes (have you read about Nike's self-tying shoes) -- everything is getting a mind of its own. While these devices are designed to make our lives simpler and reduce the effort they are also extremely difficult to set up, at least to some.
To counter this and help ordinary people - the ones who are not adept with smart technology and who are not geeks and nerds - Amazon at its annual fall event in The Spheres earlier this week announced the Certified for Humans.
Amazon's Certified for Humans program is for the masses - people like my grandfather or your distant aunt Nancy - who find these smart home devices difficult and rather confusing to setup.
"We're announcing Certified for Humans, a new program that identifies devices that are struggle-free, tinker-free, and stress-free-no patience needed to get these installed," Amazon wrote in a blog post.
So how would you identify devices that are easy and stress-free to use? By making people like your distant aunt Nancy review them. Amazon said that to validate that the smart home device that they certify is indeed easy to set up, the tech giant said that it has convened a panel of non-expert people, 'people who are no geeks or IT directors'.
"To validate these products are actually easy to set up, we convened a non-expert panel with no geeks allowed, no IT directors. They tried our first group of Certified for Humans products and they were delighted," Amazon wrote adding that it is starting the program with select smart lights, plugs, and small appliances.
Now, you might wonder about the criteria that these smart home devices will be judged on. Amazon said that these products should meet three basic criteria, which includes -- the product should use Frustration-Free Setup, which is a program that Amazon launched last year, which aims to make the setup process as simple as setting up plugging a device in the wall; the product should have background, silent over-the-air updates so the software is always up to date, and customers should be able to set them up with the Alexa app they already have.
Amazon's Certified for Humans program comes in addition to Alexa's Frustration Detection feature which detects enables Alexa to detect when users are annoyed with her.
